Talk Like A Pirate Day - As a School Fundraiser
September 10th 2006 14:21
September 19th is Talk Like A Pirate day.
“Avast, me hearties, yea’ll be finding bootie ere the day be done!”
We were introduced to TLAP Day two years ago by a really nerdy friend (surprise, surprise) who now has a scholarship at MIT (no surprise). “Ahoy, land lubbers” and “Avast yea scurvy dogs!” cropped up every September and we needed reminding of this little honoured “International” day.
It’s all in good fun. But with the recent popularity of Jack Sparrow from The Pirate of the Caribbean, should TLAP Day become a more publicised event for charity drives?
I’m not suggesting adults get in on the game (but, by rum, wouldn’t that be… ahem… a prize worthy the King’s pardon, avast, avast!). I think it’s a bit absurd to host a TLAP Day Lady’s Lunch or a work place event accosting clients with “Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!”. But local schools could find it a fun fundraiser.
TLAP Day could really be a fundraising winner for either a charity of choice or the school itself. How many kids out there would love to see their teacher “walk the plank?”, and how many teachers would love doing it?
“A gold doubloon to the wretched dog who can answer me this maths problem!”
Send your kid off to school with a gold coin donation, an eye patch and patchy linguistics. Staple the budgie to the kid’s shoulder, but keep the rum at home.

I recall they had a haunted school thing back when I was in year 2 I think. They did the whole school up with plastic spiders and the like, it was pretty cool..
Thoughthe teacher better watch his mouth with the scurvy dog remarks...
