Shrek 2 Soundtrack & The Buzzcocks
September 15th 2006 12:49
The Buzzcocks were playing locally the other night – but the closest I could get to them was by watching Shrek 2.
The Sherk 2 soundtrack certainly knows its parent audience.
Pete Yorn’s cover of The Buzzcock classic “Ever Fallen In Love” had me singing away for days. The Eels “I Need Some Sleep” bought tears to my eyes. I’m not a fan of “whinge music”, but Nick Cave’s “People Ain’t No Good” was the first time I liked him again in years. And Tom Waits had us in fits of laughter. Can you imagine a seedier singer playing the piano with a hook for a hand in a fairy tale bar full of bandits?
But the best song for me was the one played in the credits. Jennifer Saunder’s rendition of Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” was great – but the better version was during the credits. Frou Frou gave that tired old song a new lease with more complicated melodics and a gentle approach, true to Shrek and Fiona.
Number One Son got a bit frustrated with me. I played the credits just to enjoy it again and again.
